Neighbors Ensuring Sea Turtle Survival Project (NESTS)
Tybee Beach Vacation Rentals is also pleased to support both the Neighbors Ensuring Sea Turtle Survival Project (NESTS) and the Tybee Island Sea Turtle Project. 5 species of sea turtles nest on Georgia’s beaches, primarily the Loggerhead Turtle which is currently on the Endangered Species List.Loggerhead Turtles Crawling on Sand
The Problem: When turtle hatchlings come out of the nest their instincts direct them move to light which, until modern lighting was developed, was the moon and stars reflecting off the ocean. Today, the direct light from houses near the beach and “sky glow” from coastal cities can confuse the hatchlings and cause them to move inland where their chance of survival is almost nonexistent.
What We Can Do: Visitors to Tybee Island are asked to turn off beachfront outdoor lighting and to either dim inside lighting or close window coverings at 9:00 PM from May 1 through October 31.
