An Overview of the Beaches on Tybee Island

Are you looking for a peaceful beach getaway without the crowds? Tybee Island may be just the right destination for you. Here are a few things you should know about Tybee beaches:

North Beach: The North Beach is located across from the historic Tybee Lighthouse and Fort Screven. While North Beach is situated closest to Savannah, it is quieter than most of the other beaches on the island, making it the ideal place to relax with a good book. This stretch of coast is home to seashell covered sands, a great surf spot, restaurants, and a brand new restroom and shower station.

Mid Beach: Stretching all the way from 1st street to 14th, Mid Beach is the perfect place for families. With fewer amenities, visitors who are staying nearby will enjoy a far less crowded beach. Keep in mind, there is no designated parking lot for this area but street parking with meters are available at every numbered street.

South Beach: Located south of 14th street, visitors will find the Tybee Pier & Pavilion at South Beach. The Pavilion provides restrooms, picnic tables, snacks, and cold drinks for both adults and children. As the most active beach on the island, South Beach is also a prime spot for fishing and other water activities. Visitors can enjoy several amenities such as shops, bars, and restaurants.

Back River Beach: If you’re looking for a quiet place to relax, Back River Beach is the place for you. This beach is an excellent spot for fishing and is also a popular starting point to begin a kayak adventure over to Little Tybee Island. Here, visitors should swim at their own risk as there are no lifeguards on duty.

Savannah River Beach: If you want an even quieter alternative to North Beach, then Savannah River Beach can meet those needs. The beach opens up to the Savannah River and is an ideal spot for bird and dolphin watching. As with Back River Beach, there are public restrooms available for visitors but no lifeguards.
