From its humble beginnings as a summertime walk-up ice cream stand, to its current status as a year-round full-menu restaurant, The Sugar Shack has grown and changed almost as much as its four owners! The four Grosse brothers, Russell, Ian, Louis, and Bruce, already had a name for themselves as “The Peanut Boys” when they acquired The Sugar Shack in 1971. Capitalizing on serving good, substantial breakfasts, Paul Yao worked the grill while Agnes Yao waited on the customers. Soon after, the high-quality breakfast caught the attention and taste buds of the Savannah Morning News, featuring Sunrise in a review that claimed, “the omelettes are the specialty of the house.” Word spread and success followed. Tybee Sunrise expanded to a second location on Tybee Island in 1990.
