Tybee Island is an Atlantic Ocean barrier island located on Georgia’s northernmost coastal area, only 20 minutes from historic Savannah. Tybee became the site of the first lighthouse to be erected on the South Atlantic coast in 1736. “Tybee” (pronounced Tie-bee) is a Euchee Indian word meaning “salt”, which was a valuable resource to both the indigenous population and, later, the Spanish and French traders who stumbled upon this paradise.
For hundreds of years, this beautiful island has been home to pirates, soldiers, fishermen, beachcombers, traders, vacationers and those of us who came to visit and just couldn’t bring ourselves to leave! Come see what that #SaltLife is all about and get your #TybeeOn! Don’t forget your flip-flops!
